Military Family Monologues
During Vietnam, President Johnson decided that a draft was more politically acceptable than widespread mobilization of citizen soldiers and multiple deployments of married troops. Presidents Bush and Obama wagered that the opposite was true. They won their elections, but a growing number of military families are losing their lives in the war at home.
For the first time in modern history, the United States entered into prolonged combat operations in 2001 without a draft, a war tax, or a national mandate to contribute to the war effort through rationing, buying war bonds, and other means. The end of the American Homefront has placed a crippling burden on the military families left behind, who are suffering mental health issues at nearly the same rate as returning troops.
Stacy Bannerman, M.S., author of When the War Came Home (2006), is one of those family members. When she began hearing from, and about, military family members killing themselves or trying to; when she kept hearing from, or about, military families suffering the explosion of veteran interpersonal violence; when she kept hearing from, or about, military family members with kids as young as five on prescription medication for anxiety and depression; when she kept hearing from, or about, military family members caring for wounded veterans without any support and on the brink of a breakdown, she knew it was time to act.
Homefront 911: Military Family Monologues tells how a decade of war is coming home for the families left behind. Produced and presented by Stacy Bannerman, wife of a two-time Iraq War veteran, and other military family members, Homefront 911, "is truth-telling at its disturbingly best," says author Karen Spears Zacharias.
