KHALIL OSIRIS

Khalil Osiris

Elaine Brown, author/activist and former leader of the Black Panther Party, has said that, "in the absence of black leadership today, Khalil Osiris is a new and powerful voice that must be heard. As dynamic as Michael Eric Dyson and erudite as Cornell West, Khalil brings us an unparalleled message, bolstered by his 'street credentials' and his active dedication to an agenda for freedom."

Khalil, who spent 15 years in prison, is an activist, author, college professor and pastor. During his incarceration at Norfolk Prison Colony in Massachusetts (where, as he knew, Malcolm X served time), he earned a Bachelor's degree and a Master's degree from Boston University (where, as he knew, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., earned his doctoral degree). The historic significance of this prison inspiring his actions, Khalil Osiris did something historic -- he co-founded The National Black Herstory Task Force to celebrate the extraordinary contributions to society of women of African descent. He organized prisoner study groups and brought in lecturers, including Kwame Toure (formerly Stokely Carmichael) and Ysaye Barnwell of Sweet Honey in the Rock. Upon his release, he co-founded the National Alliance for Radical Prison Reform. Both Herstory and the Alliance were formed and continue to be based in Atlanta, Georgia.

Khalil's writings include co-authorship of Talking and Listening with Care: A Communication Guide for Singles and Couples and The Psychology of Incarceration -- which is also the name of the course he teaches at Wright State University in Dayton, Ohio. This course is recognized by the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction as an "approved reentry program" for prisoners. Presently, he is writing his prison memoir, tentatively titled Life Beyond the Wall, and an essay book, Black Mask-ulinity.

Osiris is the Director of the Cincinnati Youth Collaborative's S.P.A.R.K. (Strengthening Partnerships and Resources for Kids) Program, which provides mentors for children of incarcerated parents. He lectures around the country on ending the criminal mass incarceration of millions of people in the United States, particularly blacks, as he works to eliminate all forms of oppression.

Khalil Osiris can be paired with Elaine Brown for an unforgettable evening of the new Black vision for a just and fair America.
