MICIA MOSELY

Pharmicia (Micia) M. Mosely

As a comedic actor, writer, and education/diversity trainer, Pharmicia (Micia) M. Mosely has drawn on her Brooklyn roots and passions for theatre and improvisational comedy to create a unique blend of hip humor, political astuteness, and versatility in every performance. During the past 10 years, she has performed in front of diverse audiences ranging from theatres and high schools to clubs and art festivals. With perfect comedic timing, spontaneous creativity, and a wealth of social and cultural knowledge, she illustrates how one can use art to make a positive impact on the lives of people and society at large.

Micia Mosely has over 15 years of public performance experience in theater, comedy, music and spoken word, and she has developed several ensemble productions. She also has years of experience working with youth, including directing youth theater productions and seasonal performances.

In May of 2006, Micia debuted her hilarious one-woman show, Where My Girls At?: A Comedic Look at Black Lesbians in the Bay Area , and toured nationally. This widely acclaimed show has garnered much praise from the artistic and academic communities, both in the Bay Area and nationally. Her work addresses issues of race, class, gender and sexuality in multiple forms. Through her skillful facilitation (incorporating improvisational comedy and spoken word) Micia ensures that her audiences are left with a sore funny bone, a stimulated mind and a full heart.  She has performed at numerous festivals and conferences including the Oakland’s Art and Soul festival, the National Queer Arts Festival and stand-up venues such as Oakland Metro, Luna Sea, S.F., CA, The Hong Kong, Cambridge, MA, Cholmondelys, Waltham, MA as well as universities and community college campuses.

A proud graduate of Brooklyn Technical High School, Micia received her Ph.D. in education, with a focus on social and cultural studies from the University of California at Berkeley. She began her career in education teaching high school social studies, and through her work as a School Improvement Coach she went on to support the creation and development of several small public schools in the Bay Area.  Her research interests include teaching, race, and urban education. She is the co-author of the article, “The Discipline Gap: Teachers’ Views on the Overrepresentation of African American Students in the Discipline System” and is a contributing author of the book, Unfinished Business: Closing the Racial Achievement Gap in Our Schools. She is currently working on a book examining how teachers make sense of the complexities of urban education while adhering to federal and state educational mandates. In addition to her writing and performance work, Micia lectures and leads workshops on diversity and equity in education nation-wide.
