SHARI CAUDRON

The Rise of Fanatical Passion in America
Shari Caudron is a journalist and author of the wildly popular and critically acclaimed book, Who Are You People?, a rollicking armchair adventure which recounts the three years she spent criss-crossing the country with passionate fanatics such as furries, Star Wars fans, Barbie collectors and Grobanites. (Don't know what a Grobanite is? Don't worry. She didn't either.) The book, which Psychology Today called a "warm, funny anthropology of outsiders," was a top choice on Entertainment Weekly's "Must List".
Caudron, whose narrative nonfiction has been compared to Susan Orlean and Barbara Ehrenreich, is a funny and engaging speaker whose stories will take you places you've never been (and perhaps never considered) - storm chasing in Kansas, pigeon racing in the Bronx, following Josh Groban's tour bus through the Texas night, and attending a "limb reconstruction workshop" at the annual Barbie Doll Collector's Convention. Along the way, Caudron weaves in important insights about life in America today. As she discovered, you can't talk about passion without also talking about identity, belonging, God, genetics, the Internet, contemporary community life, and how each of us, in one way or another, is an outsider.
Caudron is a career journalist whose articles and essays have appeared in Reader's Digest, Christian Science Monitor, USA Today and many other publications. Her first book, What Really Happened, was a humor finalist in the Book of the Year Awards.
Her talks are ideal for colleges and universities that are seeking speakers on:
- Contemporary Culture, Sociology and Social Psychology
- American Studies
- Diversity
- Writers and Writing
- Women's Issues
